Yes, my first two purchases in Prague were at American
stores. Got a problem with it?
Okay, okay. I am
perhaps a bit defensive but I walked to a nearby mall and there just *happened*
to be a Starbucks there. The fact that I
had asked the receptionist when I first arrived if there was a Starbucks near
the hotel was purely a coincidence because I hadn’t planned to end up there
today…at least not so early. And, and,
and…I really needed a way to charge my MacBook in the hotel since I forgot my
outlet adaptor at home. Was it my fault
there happened to be an Apple store in the very same mall??? (I wonder if my writing program would
appreciate the use of the extra question marks.
Surely that is a writing technique that is taught in MFA’s for writing,
right? ????) ;)
My hotel had a great breakfast buffet in their associated
café. I am not usually a bacon fan.
I like it but I usually only have one (well, okay two due to my whole
even-number OCD for certain things) pieces but their bacon was super good. I think it was one of the first times that I
actually went back to get seconds of bacon.
I imagine it was what bacon in the States was like before it became so
standardized. Or, perhaps people that
live on farms and get their own fresh bacon have the awesomeness of the bacon
that I ate this morning. Guess what I’ll
be looking for tomorrow. If I can take a
picture of the whole bacon pile, I will.
I have been super impressed with the number of languages I
hear spoken here. I’ve heard Russian and
French this morning at breakfast and I am assuming that the random things that
people called out to me in the mall were Czech.
(My guess it that they were saying “Hello” and “Come buy ” as opposed to something like “Away from here you filthy American
Tourist.” Even the nice Starbuck lady
spoke two, if not more languages during the time I was waiting for my drink.
Aside from the different languages, there were a lot of
stores that were familiar in the mall – Sephora, Samsung, Costa Coffee,
Starbucks, Apple Style (like a smaller Apple store), and more. It was also interesting that the next
language people tried when they spoke to me was English. For that I am grateful because I am afraid I
know no Czech words at all. My Russian
is lacking (although some words that I’ve heard spoken here remind me of Russian)
so French would be my next option. I’ve
been trying to think of how to say things in French just in case I need to use
it mais
j'ai oublié comment dire beaucoup de mots.
The temperature isn’t too bad but it is really muggy out
there today and is sprinkling a little.
The area is so cute looking and I am looking forward to playing more of
a tourist. However, today I need to
finish reading Kafka’s The Castle.
Off to do some homework!

Kafka? For fun? I mean, The Metamorphosis was good, but the others were...good for insomnia.

LOL - Since my MFA program starts here in Prague and Franz Kafka was born in what is now the Czech Republic, The Castle is our "book in common" for all the different sub-groups of the MFA. I'm part of the "Writing for Children and Young Adults" so this book has been much more challenging to read than the other more fun books. Since I slept so much yesterday, I have a lot of reading to do tonight. Although that reminds me that I still have some German fairy tales to read too (we go to Berlin after Prague).
